Reduce your stress level with 10 simple hacks

If you live with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, it can be a very stressful time, not only for you, but also for your family. Don’t let stress overtake your life!
Reducing stress can help improve decision-making, concentration, as well as quality of life. Here are ten tips to reduce stress:
1. Know your limits and say no It’s important that you know your limits and know what you can tolerate. Also let others know your limits and don’t take on more than you can handle. It is ok to say no! 2. Know what is causing stress in your life If you notice that a situation is stressful for you, accept help in these situations. If you find yourself in such a stressful situation, try to look for the positive whenever possible. This will help to calm you down. 3. Eat a healthy diet This might not be obvious, but well-nourished bodies can better cope with stress. Try to reduce coffee and sugar. 4. Don’t hold back with your feelings Talking to people you trust about your feelings and problems can reduce stress enormously. 5. Change your environment If you find yourself in a place that is causing you stress, change it! Find a quiet place, take a deep breath and start over again with what you wanted to do. 6. Learn what you need to relax Some people need a quiet place to relax, some people need music, or can just relax while taking some deep breaths. It is very important that you know how you can relax best, and repeat these things over and over again. 7. Let it go It’s ok to stop doing something, when it stresses you out. 8. Take breaks Don’t be scared to take breaks. It can help you to get more energy and concentrate again. 9. Exercise regularly Physical activity can play a key role in reducing stress. It releases endorphins, which usually boost your mood and make you feel good. Please keep in mind that you don’t need to be an athlete or spend hours in the gym. It can be going for a walk, cycling to the grocery store, playing ping-pong or playing some music and dance around. 10. Avoid people who stress you out If one person consistently causes stress in your life, limit the amount of time you spend with this person. This can sometimes be very hard, as it can be close family-members. It is important not to hurt feelings and to be completely open about your situation.
