Healthy Eating can reduce Symptoms of Depression


Mental health is a hot topic in year 2017. This is not only true for conditions like Alzheimer’s and Dementia, but also for a more hidden conditions, such as Depression. Depression is a common illness, which negatively affects how you feel, as well as how you act and think. Often, people with depression lose interest in activities they once enjoyed doing. The good thing with depression is that it is treatable. Depression can occur at any time of the year, but it appears more often in autumn and winter, when days are shorter and there is less sunshine. Often, this gets referred to as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Did you know that what you eat, your diet, can actually have a massive impact on your mood, and combined with physical exercise, it can even be seen as a treatment, should you live with a depression.

Research suggests that if you eat a lot of processed food, with lots of sugar, and take in high doses of caffeine, your mood will go down, when the sugar and caffeine peak wears off. On top, caffeine can also impact your sleep. It will make it harder for your to fall asleep and stay asleep and your quality of sleep suffers. Eventually, you are more tired, which can affect your mode enormously.

Did you hear from friends that completed a 5k, 10k, half marathon or even a full marathon that they feel great after that? Yes? This is because, if you exercise, your body releases endorphins. Endorphins are also known as the “feel good hormone”, as they make you feel happier. If you exercise for only 30 minutes per day, you can already feel the benefits in your mental health. And, with “exercising”, we in fact mean “moving”! Any kind of movement is good. So, you don’t need to go to a gym, you can simply do some brisk walking, swimming or play with your children or grandchildren to be active and release endorphins.

What are good foods to eat if you feel low? You probably guessed it, but fruits and vegetables are crucial, because they give your body the right fuel with vitamins and minerals. Plus, research found out that oily fish can also have a very positive effect on mental health. This means that salmon, fresh tuna and also mackerel and kippers can have a very positive effect on your mood and overall mental health.
